ABOUT IMC

Three Generations of Precision Manufacturing

What started as a small tool design business in 1973 has grown into a full-service machining and fabrication company, still owned and operated by the same family. The work is more demanding now, the shop is bigger, and the equipment is newer. The quality standards have not changed.

How IMC Started

From a Drafting Table to a Full Shop Floor

The path from a design-only business to a full machining and fabrication business was not a straight line. It was built job by job, customer by customer, over more than 50 years. The company has never been sold, never been acquired, and never changed hands outside of the family.

1973

Founded by James Stone as Interstate Design Company

Interstate Manufacturing Company traces back to 1973, when it was founded by James Stone as Interstate Design Company, a tool design business. James' son, Keith, grew up around the shop, worked the drafting board through high school, and went full-time after graduating.

1980s

Keith joins Chandler Evans Corp

Keith left IDC to take a role at Chandler Evans Corp designing tooling for military fuel pump assemblies, work that put him alongside some of the most demanding tool design requirements in the defense industry.

2000

Design and Manufacturing Under One Roof

Design and manufacturing were operating under one roof for the first time. Interstate Design Company and the new Interstate Manufacturing Company ran alongside each other for over a decade.

2014

Companies Combined into IMC

The two companies were combined into the single operation that continues to operate today.

IMC expands its 10,000 square foot building to 17,500 square feet.

WHO RUNS IT NOW

Still Family, Still Hands On

IMC is owned by Keith Stone, his son Jimmy, and his daughter Alexa, making it a genuine third-generation family business.

Keith Stone

Quoting & Customer Relationships

Keith stays closely involved in quoting, customer relationships, and the kind of problem-solving that requires someone with 40 years of industry experience.

Jimmy Stone

DAY-TO-DAY SHOP OPERATIONS

Jimmy manages day-to-day shop operations, a role he has grown into over nearly a full decade with the company.

Alexa Stone

SUPPLIERS & PROCUREMENT

Alexa manages all of IMC's suppliers and procures all of the materials and outside services.

That structure means that you are not talking to a sales layer when you call IMC. You are talking to the people who will actually build your parts. Decisions get made quickly, and accountability lives with the people running the machines, not a corporate office somewhere else.

Most of the team has been with IMC for years and decades. That kind of workforce stability in the shop translates into consistency on the floor, and that consistency is what keeps customers coming back for repeat work.

OUR FACILITY

Invested

IMC operates out of a 17,500-square-foot, climate-controlled facility in Agawam. The original building was 10,000 square feet, and was expanded by 7,500 square feet in 2022 to keep pace with production demand. Since that expansion, IMC has invested several million dollars in new equipment.

Climate control matters in precision machining. Temperature swings cause material expansion, leading to dimensional drift and parts failing inspection. The facility is maintained year-round to keep tolerances consistent across every season.

The shop is organized around the workflow. Design, machining, fabrication, and inspection all operate in the same building, which means work moves from station to station without leaving the building or sitting in a scheduling queue waiting for a vendor handoff.

CREDENTIALS

ITAR Registered and Aerospace Focused

ITAR

Registered with the U.S. Department of State

Under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and renew that registration annually. ITAR registration means that IMC is authorized to work on controlled defense articles and services, which is a requirement for much of the aerospace and defense work in our customer base.

ACM

Member of Aerospace Components Manufacturers

An industry organization connecting aerospace and defense manufacturers in the region. IMC’sOur work serves engine manufacturers, helicopter builders, and defense prime contractors who require a domestic supplier capable of meeting tight tolerance, quality, and documentation requirements.

AMONG THE LOYAL CUSTOMERS WE WORK WITH

Their programs require suppliers who can be counted on to hold the blueprint specifications, validate the work, and ship on time. That's the standard we hold ourselves to on every order.

What Sets Us Apart

Tool and Die Roots, Production Capability

Most shops specialize in one end of the spectrum: either precision tooling and prototypes, or high-volume production runs. We do both. That combination is increasingly hard to find as experienced toolmakers retire from the industry and shops narrow their focus to stay efficient.

    Precision Tooling & Prototypes

Our roots in tool design mean that we approach every job with an understanding of why things are toleranced the way that they are.

    High-Volume Production

When a customer brings us a challenging requirement, IMC's team collaborates with them to achieve the best results.

    Decades of Repeat Business

Consistent quality and on-time delivery are what build accounts over the years. That is the standard that we hold the company to, and it is the reason that most of our customers have been with us for decades.
